Like other Manufactured ECM’s, Detroit modules experience the same problems, these units however seem to have a higher rate of Micro-Processor related issues. These processers seem to get corrupted rather easy; a spike in voltage is all it takes. The elements the ECM encounters are also a determining factor. A bad oil leak is an instigator; oil will find its way into the ECM and slowly eat up its circuits. Water can also be blamed for causing units to fail, we understand the need for some of these engines to be pressure washed but you have to consider the problems it can cause. Water can and does get into the ECM, leaving moisture on circuits that will eventually deteriorate. Please use caution when having your engine washed.
